Vision Statement

It is the mission of the School Counseling Program at South Hills Elementary School to recognize the unique attributes of each student where the school counselor facilitates, empowers and nurtures students to succeed socially, educationally and academically. This is accomplished by collaborating with other educators, families, students, as well as with members of the community. The counseling program maintains high expectations for all students; we aim to provide students with the skills to become effective life-long learners and productive members of their community.

The Role of The School Counselor

The professional school counselor is a certified/licensed educator trained in school counseling with unique qualifications and skills to address all students' academic, personal/social, and career development needs. Professional school counselors implement a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and enhances student achievement. As a school counselor, I address the needs of all students through prevention and intervention programs.

Professional school counselors provide services to students, parents, school staff, and the community in the following areas:

  • School Guidance Curriculum--structured lessons designed and appropriate for each developmental level (Topics include but not limited to bullying prevention, friendship skills, social skills, appropriate ways to communicate feelings, ways to promote kindness and compassion to others, stress management, goal setting/study skills/career development, etc.).
  • Individual Student Planning--coordinate ongoing systemic activities designed to help students establish personal goals and develop future plans.
  • Responsive Services--prevention and intervention activities such as individual/group counseling; consultation with parents, teachers, other educators; referrals to other school support services or community resources; peer help; etc.
  • System Support--maintaining personal and professional development, consultation, collaboration, program management, and operations.

This year students can refer themselves for counseling by submitting a request to see the counselor.
